The Roman Republic officially ended when Julius Caesar declared himself dictator for life and sent his army into Rome. He was eventually killed on Senate floor by being stabbed to death by all of the senators, including his best friend, Brutus. His death plunged the empire into a bloody civil war.

Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar's nephew, eventually takes control of Rome and calls himself emperor. Rome would continue to be ruled by an emperor until its fall in 476 CE.

During this time period, Rome expanded to control most of the Mediterrenean Sea even extending as far north as the British Isles. Order was kept due to Rome's strong military tradition as well as thousands of miles of roads that were used to connect all corners of the empire.
