Started by Mohammed in the Middle East. Islam is a monotheistic religion that shares some beliefs and origins with both Judaism and Christianity. There are 5 basic beliefs that all Muslims follow.

Daily prayer - Muslims pray 5 times a day.

Ramadan - Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims in which they fast. The end of Ramadan is marked by the holiday of Eid.

Alms for the poor - Muslims give charity to those that are less fortuante then themselves.

Faith - The Shahada states that there is only 1 God and Mohammed is his prophet.

Trip to Mecca - Muslims must make a pilgrimmage to Mecca if they are able. This is called the Hajj.

The two holy cities of Islam are Mecca and Medina. Both are located in present day Saudi Arabia.

There are two major sects of Islam: Sunni and Shiite. Both follow the 5 pillars but Shiites believe that the leader of Islam should be descended from Mohammed's family while the Sunnis believe that any good Muslim can lead Islam.
