The Cold War was a period of increased tensions between the U.S. & U.S.S.R. After WWII, The U.S. and the U.S.S.R. became superpowers. They had the most influence with other, smaller, countries. The Soviet Union influenced Eastern European countries (Satellite States) including East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia while the U.S. influenced western European countries.

Josef Stalin - Communist dictator of the Soviet Union. He takes over after Lenin dies and rules harshly. He has a secret police and killed anybody who threatened his power. His 5 year plan for the Soviet Union focused on creating heavy industry and collectivizing farms.

Marshall Plan = US plan to rebuild Western Europe

Containment = US policy of keeping communism from spreading

Truman Doctrine = US gave money to Greece & Turkey to prevent it from being communist

NATO was an alliance between US and European countries against USSR

Warsaw Pact was an alliance of countries that are loyal to the USSR

Cuban Missile Crisis = The closest the world has ever been to a nuclear war. The Soviets tried to place a missile base on Cuba. The U.S. blockaded the Soviet ships in a standoff that lasted 13 days.

During the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviets built up a massive amount of nuclear weapons during the arms race. They also competed to be the first country to land on the moon. The U.S. landed on the moon in 1969.

In the 1980s, Mikhail Gorbachev takes over as leader of the Soviet Union. He has policies that weaken communism and make Russia more capitalist and democratic.

Glastnost = Openness in government

Perestroika = Economic reforms, introduced capitalist ideas into economy

SALT Treaties = reduced the number of nuclear weapons that both the U.S. and Soviet Union had.

The Berlin Wall falls in 1989 and signals the end of communism in Europe. Just 2 years later in 1991, the Soviet Union would collapse for good.
